Gas Service In Michigan we normally have 3 ways to heat our homes. Most of us use natural gas which comes in like the picture above. In the 1st picture the gas company has to dig down and find the gas line and the second picture shows the connection process. (Which is pretty interesting in real life.) Then a deep trench is dug and finally the gas line is installed. All lines have to be pressure tested before a gas meter can be hooked up. Another requirement for hook up is a furnace or something that requires gas must be installed and ready to turn on. When you order your gas line make sure you order a big enough gas line to expand for the future if you are adding several things that will need gas. Make sure you order your gas line well in advance. DTE at the moment with the merger with the electric company has put it way behind in scheduling. The way things are now I would order my gas at least 8 weeks before you would need it. If you need to put the gas line in after December 15th there will be an added charge for winter installation. Presently the charge is an extra dollar a lineal foot. Propane Gas The second most used heating gas is propane. Just a note to let you know. When you get propane gas you have to have a propane gas furnace. Plus you have to have propane appliances and a propane fireplace. Here (as in above picture) you actually put in a tank. Most tanks go on top of the ground and are white in color. Tanks generally come in 500 gallon and 1000 gallon capacities. The tank you see above is an underground 1000 gallon system. This particular system cost us $2500 for the tank and then you have to pay to install it underground. Electric Heat The 3rd most popular heat is hot water baseboard. This is where you put in a hot water boiler and the heating units wrap around your walls by the floor in your home. Most of you have seen these units and its a nice even way to heat your home.
