INSULATION Superior Insulation Everyone has an opinion on insulation. This is how I view this. Its my way of thinking and if someone else has a different idea than that's ok by me. The picture on the left is the paper system which is crushed up newspaper and than blown in the walls. Its very compact and its an excellent insulation process. The insulation on the right is the same way its been done for years. Its blanket insulation. As I understand it, we lose up to 70% of our heat through the ceilings. So we use what is suppose to be the maximum amount without being wasteful. We do R-38 in the ceilings. If its summer time we like to blown it all in. If its winter than we have to put down a blanket first so we can heat and than drywall. After this we will blow the rest of it in. The blown- in seems to seal better over the blanket in the ceilings. As long as we have been building our houses we build with either 2 x 4 studs wall or 2 x 6 stud walls. On the outside wall we put a 7/16 inch particle board but we also add an additional R-4 board that is called sturdy board. Than we put the tyvek wrap over this and we nail it down with rubber ended nails and we tyvek tape all of the seams. We also use extra tyvek tape over the exterior window flanges. On the inside of the walls (2 x 4) we use R-13 blanket insulation. If the walls are 2 x 6 we use R-19 blanket insulation. So with our 2 x 4 wall system we end up with nearly a R-17 factor in the walls. With our 2 x 6 wall system we end up with nearly a R-23 insulation factor in the walls. The things most people don't think about is the more windows the more loss of energy through the windows. If you build your home with 33% windows in the wall area than you lose an enormous amount of energy because of the windows. You cannot get windows that have nearly the same energy efficiency as having just a wall there. I know it seems like common sense here but many people just don't think when they are building a home. Whenever we build a home we pay special attention to the North and West walls as that is where most of the cold blowing air comes from in the winter time. If people are really tight on their budget we will sometimes even build the North & West walls with 2 x 6 studs and the remainder of the home with 2 x 4 studs.
