Hiring a trim carpenter is a job in itself.  The basic problem with the industry is finding the right contractors in the first place.  The building business does not seem to be any different than any other business.  Normally what you pay for is what you get.  We have seen so many circumstances come up that its sort of difficult to explain.  In a nut shell here it is.  Just because a contractor charges a lot of money does not mean the contractor is very good.  The same thought process is included in reverse.  Just because a contractor charges too little does not mean the contractor is not very good.  We try and most of the time we succeed at:  Finding the contractor who does excellent work at a reasonable price but at the same time the owner of the contracting company is easy to talk to and the people that work for the contractor are also easy people to talk to.  Unfortunately a homeowner building on their own does not have the luxury of knowing the  items in the previous line. Let me organize these for you.

  •   Reasonable price

  •   Excellent work

  •   Easy to get along with

You might be able to get 2 out of the 3 but you really do not know until the project is 1/2 done or completely finished.  At which point it might be to late.

A little story for you.  One of my friends calls me up and asks me for a referral for a trim carpenter.  I tell him my contractor is busy with me for 2 more months and he should wait.  He decides to find a company that he can higher at what he thinks is a good price and quality oriented.  Two months later my friend calls me and says he gave the other company $4,000 to start the trim job but now he is not satisfied with the company's work.  Well, what do you suppose happened?  Right!  He lost his $4,000 and than he still had to wait for my guy to come over and fix the other company's work.  Don't get me wrong.  There are great contractors out there.  You just have to know who to hire and how to hire them.  Unless you have been around for a long time its sort of a hit and miss situation.  Part of the problem is that you have to know how to manage the people.  If you don't know what your looking for than how can you manage them?
